Australia's toughest athletes ready to sweat it out at Hamilton Island Endurance Series
Preparations are underway for athletes across the country to push themselves in paradise with the Hamilton Island Endurance Series set to begin on the 1st of May with the Hilly Half Marathon.
The four-event series which runs from May to November is known as one of the toughest and includes the Hamilton Hilly Half Marathon, Great Whitehaven Beach Run, Hamilton Island Triathlon and the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim.
The 2016 Endurance series promises to be Hamilton Island's biggest series yet, as it celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Hilly Half Marathon with the addition of a full marathon comprising two loops of the popular 21km Hilly Half course. The Hilly Half Marathon is known to athletes as challenging and rugged due to the diversity of the terrain, and also includes a 3 x 7km relay, and three junior marathon courses for budding athletes.
Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and Hamilton Hilly Half Marathon Race veteran Steve Moneghetti said the inclusion of the full marathon course presented the ultimate endurance challenge for competitors.
"Competing only a stone's throw from the Great Barrier Reef, the Hamilton Hilly Half is probably the most scenic marathon run in Australia, but also one of the toughest," said Mr Moneghetti.
"Preparation is key for this event, and two loops of one of Australia's most challenging courses certainly won't be for the faint hearted, but I expect it will certainly attract some of Australia's best endurance athletes to attend."
Hamilton Island Chief Executive Officer Glenn Bourke said the Hilly Half Marathon, Whitehaven Beach Run and Ocean Swim, and Hamilton Island Triathlon were four of Australia's toughest endurance events.
"Hamilton Island is committed to delivering great events in one of the world's most picturesque locations and as one of Australia's most popular and challenging sporting events, the Endurance Series is no different," said Mr Bourke.
Mr Bourke said although the Endurance Series was physically wearing on its competitors, Hamilton Island was the perfect place to recover and celebrate sporting achievements.
"The Hamilton Island Endurance Series is one of the hardest in Australia, but the Island's setting amongst the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach provides the perfect destination to recover even harder."
The 2016 Hamilton Island Endurance Series is expected to be the most popular series yet, with registrations for each of the events now open.
