Weekly Newsletter September 12th 2013

This is a copy of the weekly newsletter from the Australian Running Calendar sent by email on September 12th 2013 covering interesting articles, recently updated event pages, and events coming up over the next two weeks.

Hooray - the new event listing layout and search function is finally online! I think it should now be a lot easier for people to find the information they are after at a glance, and behind the scenes listings are now a lot easier and quicker for me to update.

I'll write up a post early next week talking about some of the new features and the reasons for the change. In the meantime, go and check out the calendar page and the new search function on the left side of the page (or as a clickable button on smaller screens / older browsers).

Note that I'm still working my way through event listings and linking up the event organisers and/or series; this is going to take a couple of weeks. I have checked the next three weekends worth of events and will try to get through a month a day next week.

A journey of recovery from depression and asthma
Kate Townsley has recently started posting inspirational blogs on her Kora Kita website. The latest one is by Ana Paula Penteado; she starts "I am not going to say that running has changed my life or given me six-pack abs, because I have only done a few ultramarathons and I am still far from the athlete lifestyle - in fact, I have never felt as such, but I noticed some people started to see me a bit differently since I've done a few 100km races." The lazy person's guide to training for an ultramarathon
Vera Alves AKA Super Generic Girl writes "So you want to run a mega-race but motivation isn't your strong point? Fear not, we have training advice tailor-made for you and your sofa-loving self." I have run with Vera just once, but I read her blog, Facebook posts and Tweets and I know she can do the 60K next year at Tarawera; I'll be lining up with her for my second crack at the 100K (third Tarawera all up after 85K two years ago). Read her article here on The Guardian Running Blog.

== Recently updated event pages ==

I haven't been doing many updates since the last newsletter a week ago, due to finalising the updates to the website, but I've checked all event listings for the next three weeks to make sure they are accurate and all links work correctly. There will be many updates in the next couple of days as I run my automated processes to check for event updates.

The few updates in the last few days are as follows:

New listings and dates
New listings and dates have been added for: the Young UN Women Spring Walk/Fun Run in Brisbane.

Online entry and PDF entry forms
Online entry / PDF entry forms have been added for: the Yurebilla Trail Ultra - we already had a link to online entry but added a link to the PDF entry form.

Date corrections / updates / postponements
- I had incorrectly listed the Adventure Sport NQ Metrogaine Series as an 11 week series, when it was in fact a 5 week series of Metrogaines and 6 week series of Orienteering events. This has been fixed by splitting the Orienteering events out into the Park O Winter Series event listing.
- The Cairns Road Runners Team Challenge scheduled for 15 Sep has been cancelled due to low participant numbers.

Check the website homepage regularly for updates
I'm a bit behind on checking up on event websites, having been busy with the updates to the event listing and search function, so there'll be a truckload of updates in the next couple of days or so. Check out the website homepage for the most recently updated listings, and be sure to check back regularly as there are usually frequent updates.

Select from the various options below and click the "Search Calendar" button under the form to show events of the most interest to you. Clear form

All options are inclusive except for the kids, women only and wheelchair options. For example, choosing "On Road", "Off Road", "Short", "NSW" and "ACT" will find on and and off road short distance races in NSW and ACT. Adding "Kids" would limit those results to only events which also have a kids event.
