Weekly Newsletter May June 17th 2015
This week's newsletter has interesting articles and one event cancellation/removal.
Going Underground - The Very Real Danger of Losing Ultra Races in Australia
The race director of the Kep Ultra, Rob Donkersloot, was told a few days before his race that "because of an administrative oversight" his approvals had not been granted. Rob went ahead with the race anyway, but no approvals meant it no longer had any form of insurance and he was out on the limb with a huge personal risk. How did this come about and why is it important? Find out more at Ultra168.
Meet the man who's run two marathons a day for 51 days
The Brisbane police officer who broke the world record for cycling around Australia is now running 79km a day as he attempts the same feat on foot. Find out more at The Guardian's Running Bog.
6 things elite ultra runners are doing that you are not
Joe Uhan talks about the things ultra runners do that so many of us do not do, most of them being common sense: run slower uphill; run fast downhill; swing their arsm; run minimally; train slowly; and train very hard. Find out more at iRunFar.
Fartlek: Sweden's gift to running
Fartlek has "fart" in it because that is the Swedish word for speed. Lek means play, and so "speed-play" serves as a rough translation, although Fartlek (with a capital F) is how it's always been known. It was developed by the national cross-country coach Gösta Holmér in response to the Sweden team's poor performances against their Finnish rivals. Find out more at The Guardian.
The benefits of yoga for runners
In a follow up to an earlier article, iRunFar looks at the benefits of yoga for runners, looking at poses for core strength and then for recovery. The article has photos to show you the poses. Check it out here
To find out what's been recently updated, check the website homepage regularly. I include in this newsletter a list of the more important updates such as date changes, cancellations or late additions to the calendar. Late additions are events which will take place in the next two to three weeks and have only just been added to the website.
- I've removed the date for The Color Run in Townsville on October 18th because it's been removed from the event website and is now showing as coming to Townsville sometime in the future
Have a great running week!
