Weekly Newsletter September 9th 2015
This week's newsletter has interesting articles, a new competition for the Yass Valley Running Festival, the winners from our three recent competitions, several event date changes/corrections, and the late addition of the Crater 2 Coast in Victoria this coming Sunday.
4 common race mistakes to avoid
Caitlin Carlson at Runners Word has 4 common race mistakes and how to fix them: going out too fast; getting a side stitch; taking in fuel and feeling sick or not taking in fuel and bonking; and being so nervous you ran poorly. Check out the article here for the fixes.
Improve your uphill running today
David Roche offers three tips for getting faster and more efficient at running up hills: lean in; relax; and hike with a purpose. Read the full article here, and be sure to read the comments on that page too as they offer other insights.
When I posted the article on Facebook, someone offered this advice too: if you are hiking hills, make sure to start running again before the crest, so that you are already moving once you are into running ground again. I find I do this myself automatically, and it really helps.
Race prep like the pros
Sarah Lavender Smith covers how to prepare for your race in the month, week and day before your big race in this article at Trail Runner Magazine.
The first page in the article covers the month before (focus on nutrition; plan your gear; map it out; plan logisitcs; get enough sleep; and minimise stress) and the second page on the week before (trust the taper; stay off social media; visualise the race; find a mantra; do something else; and finish packing) and the day before (take it easy; lay everything out; double-check the details; review the course; and eat simple).
We had three competitions finish on Sunday with the winners drawn on Monday, and we have one new competition for the Yass Valley Running Festival which just started today and finishes on Thursday next week, so be sure to get your entries in quick!
