An ultramarathon or 'Ultra' is the term for any running event longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles). Some of the most common distances are 50K, 100K and 100 miles. Ultra marathons are becoming increasingly popular, especially the off-road/trail and mountain running variants as well as the ultimate endurance event - the Last One Standing (LOS) or Backyard Ultra (BYU).
